Missionaries who travel long distances to unreached nations might have some good news, as there are now airlines considering bunk beds for Economy Class passengers.
It might soon be possible to crawl into a bed and go to sleep in Economy Class on Air New Zealand. The airline has revealed that passengers can soon pay to lie down and stretch out for a few hours in bunk beds on their newest planes.
These cozy sleeping pods are called Economy Skynest. They are bunkbeds that are set aside for passengers who would like to sleep for a few hours and they will be available from May 18, 2026 on select flights.
Passengers would not have the bunk bed for the entire flight, but instead they would have access to the bed for a few hours during longer flights. The bunk beds would include a mattress with bedding, privacy curtain, seat belt, reading light, charging ports, and amenity kit.
Between each session the cabin crew will change the pillows, sheets and blanket.
According to early reports, there would be some restrictions. There would be no ‘double bunking.’ Only one passenger per bed and only one reservation at a time. There would also be a restriction on eating in the bed. No food or drinks would be allowed in the bunk bed.
At the moment, it is only Air New Zealand is testing the idea, but if it is popular, other airlines might follow, changing the game of long distance air travel for missionaries.
