How to Create a Sustainable Food Supply
Over the years, our Chinese BTJ people have gained extensive experience with greenhouses, especially with aquaponics. This technique combines the raising of fish and vegetables in one greenhouse system.
In many areas, it is a challenge to get a steady supply of healthy food. Building and maintaining greenhouses is a way to bless the local population who live in places with food shortages, as well as making missionary efforts more sustainable. Having an independent food supply makes missionary efforts more cost-effective and less dependent on outside support.
Our Mongolia team has now joined the efforts of a missionary training center in Ulaanbataar in establishing a steady food supply. The small and simple greenhouse that was present was not being used consistently. It was replaced with an aquaponic system, able to provide vegetables throughout the summer, as well as fresh fish.
Our hope is to expand this project and develop a winter greenhouse which will help provide food throughout the year. Out Chinese team is already running these types of greenhouses successfully in other places in Mongolia, and is available to help with the practical side.
