Deadly earthquake Hits Tibet, displaces thousands, kills at least 126

At least 126 people have died in the deadliest earthquake to hit Tibet in over a decade. Thousands have been injured, more than 3,600 homes destroyed, and 46,000 people have been displaced.

Today there are more than 1,400 search and rescue personnel are desperately searching for survivors that might still be alive and buried under rubble.

According to reports, a massive earthquake of 6.8 magnitude struck the city of Xigaze in China’s southern Tibet region. The People’s Liberation Army have deployed troops, helicopters and drones to aid in the search and rescue effort.

BTJ is currently working with more than 50 Chinese missionaries who preach the Gospel in the most remote mountainous areas. So far, none of the missionaries or their areas were greatly affected.

“We could feel the tremors,” reported one missionary, “but we are safe and praise the Lord that all of our friends are safe from the earthquake.”

BTJ has been working together with former Buddhists who have given their lives to Christ. One such person is Tenzin Lahkpa, a former lama that used to lead a monastery in Tibet. Tenzin’s life story can be found in the book LEAVING BUDDHA. Tenzin continues to minister in Tibet and will send reports from the earthquake area.
