The church in Iran is reporting about a revolution that does not seem to be in the news. Women are refusing to abide by the Islamic law to wear a head scarf.
Since the Islamic regime took power in 1979, all women have been required to wear a hijab in public at all times. No exception.
However, something happened two years ago when a 22-year-old woman named Mahsa Amini, was killed by police after she suffered from her injuries for simply not wearing her headscarf properly.
Her death was followed by some of the largest protests that Iran has seen in the last decade. In response, the government of Iran doubled-down even harder, passing stricter measures on women, but those laws didn’t go over well. According to Naghmeh Panahi, an Iranian house church leader, “I just heard from the [house church] leaders inside that many women are not wearing coverings anymore.”
This defiant action might have even led to a secret regime change with the former hard-liner president being replaced after his suspicious death. Iran just held presidential elections this month and a more moderate president was selected.
The laws have not changed, but women are no longer covering their heads. Has the government given up? No one knows, but for now, it seems that the revolution’s victory is taking place quietly.
