For years, missionaries have been sharing about the modern day slavery practices in North Korea, but now it seems that the hermit kingdom has found a new way to abuse their people – by sending their young men to die as Russian mercenaries.
On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posted photographs on his X account of North Korean soldiers who were captured fighting for the Russians. The graphic photos highlight the hardships that the Koreans are suffering on the battlefield.
One of the pictures showed a North Korean soldier with his head and chin in bandages and another with both of his hands severely injured and bandaged.
Zelensky wrote, “Russian forces and other North Korean military personnel usually execute their wounded to erase any evidence of North Korea’s involvement in the war against Ukraine. I am grateful to the soldiers of Tactical Group No. 84 of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as our paratroopers, who captured these two [North Koreans]. As with all prisoners of war, these two North Korean soldiers are receiving the necessary medical assistance. I have instructed the Security Service of Ukraine to grant journalists access to these prisoners. The world needs to know the truth about what is happening.”
The North Korean detainees do not want to return to Russia or North Korea and BTJ missionaries understand why.
