In 2019, China began a hard crackdown on Christians and in 2020, the crackdowns to squash any opposition to their Zero Tolerance Covid-19 policy increased. The Chinese Communist Party imposed an “emergency response” level of censorship on its citizens, including launching a full force attack on VPNs.

Since 2020, it has been almost impossible to use a VPN in China, until now!

After 2020, every major VPN company accessible in China was targeted and blocked. A VPN is a virtual private network that allows Chinese citizens to access websites and apps outside the Great Firewall of China. Chinese protesters have used VPNs to access the outside world and tell the truth about China.

Since 2020, accessing banned content while in China has been next to impossible. Personally, when I returned to China in early 2023, I attempted to use several VPNs to access YouTube, Google, Gmail, Facebook, etc, but they were all thwarted. I looked up the top 10 VPNs guaranteed to work in China as listed by IT leaders, loaded them on my devices prior to my trips, but when I tried to use them, they simply did not work.

Express VPN was touted as one of the best.  I purchased a 12 month plan and loaded it.  The screenshot of the purchase order is below:

After several attempts in China, working directly with the Express support team, with no luck, I eventually canceled it.

I understand that VPN companies have days of victories and days of defeats.  So, it is possible to have a VPN that will work one weeks and not work the next.  Many of the VPN support staff that I worked with were able to assure me that their IT support would be working on it and get it working again in China, but after several attempts, I simply could not find a week where one of them was successful.

However, in February 2024, BTJ hosted a team of Christian hackers around the world. One of the hackers created a VPN specifically to get around the Chinese Firewall. I was cautiously excited. I was hopeful, but simply wasn’t sure that our simple team of misfit hackers could compete with large VPN companies with tens of millions of dollars. If large companies with thousands of employees couldn’t find a way around China’s Great Firewall, how would it be possible for us to find a way?

Well, I am sitting in China writing this article right now and loading this article using our new BTJ VPN! As soon as I arrived, I hooked up our new VPN, connected directly to our dedicated BTJ servers and it is working!

We want to thank our BTJ hackers team for making this article possible and to God for allowing us the opportunity to continue sharing His Word – even beyond the Great Firewall of China!

Dr. Eugene Bach is a known trouble-maker with an active imagination and sinful past. He has a PhD, but is not a real doctor, so please do not call for him during a medical emergency on an airplane when someone is having a heart attack. Eugene started working for Back to Jerusalem in the year 2000 after a backroom deal involving Chinese spies, the NRA, Swiss bankers, and a small group of Apostolic Christians that only baptize in Jesus’ name. He spends most of his time in closed countries attempting to topple governments by proclaiming the name of Jesus and not taking showers. From time-to-time he pretends to be a writer. He is not good at it, but everyone around him tries to humor him.
