Yesterday I arrived in Sweden in time to watch the St. Lucia celebrations on national television. St. Lucia is an annual celebration that I have purposefully added to my life and have passed it on to my children.
On this special day, all across Sweden in schools and preschools, churches, workplaces, town squares, and countless choral and community events, Lucia processions bring light to the darkness of winter when children’s groups, youth choirs and adult choirs and from national to local each dress in white full-length gowns and sing the songs of Christian martyrs.
This is a solemn time when the entire nation of Sweden stops to celebrate the memory of Lucia of Syracuse, an early fourth-century Christian martyr who brought food to aid the persecuted Christians in hiding during the worst persecution in recorded Roman history. Wearing candles on her head so she could carry as much food as possible to the Christians in hiding, Lucia – a name that means light – brought hope to the persecuted believers.
Today, the same message of Lucia is needed for the believers in Nigeria where an average of 32 Christians are being killed per day.
This Christmas join together with BTJ as we bring food to the persecuted Christians in Nigeria.
