On a recent visit to Bhutan, Eugene saw firsthand how religious freedom limitations make it difficult for Christians to practice their faith.
Bhutan maintains strict restrictions on Christian worship, but generates less public discourse on religious persecution compared to nations like Saudi Arabia. The assumption that all Bhutanese people must practice Buddhism creates challenges for Christians who feel pressured to abandon their new faith and revert to their original beliefs. Christians gather in private homes because current conditions prevent them from using official church buildings. Eugene’s experiences in Bhutan revealed the challenges Christians encounter, while also showing how small yet thriving Christian communities create fellowship outside traditional church settings.
People around the world admire Bhutan’s natural beauty, yet remain unaware of the country’s strict restrictions on religious diversity. Buddhism’s peaceful facade hides its constraints between outward appearances and its internal reality. Nevertheless, changes are unfolding.
The pastor BTJ is partnered with informed Eugene of an extraordinary transformation at his church that now comprises roughly 100 Dzongkha-speaking Christians of which 70 received baptism through the pastor himself. The successful translation of the Bible into Dzongkha through this partnership with BTJ represents a significant achievement for the believers there.
This endeavor emphasizes Eugene’s core belief: divine purpose surpasses individual agendas. BTJ shifted its mission to distribute Dzongkha audio Bibles after recognizing their significance while continuing its commitment to evangelism. Acts 17 describes spiritual journeys as unexpected adventures directed by God which result in unforeseen ministry work.
