URGENT HELP NEEDED: Homeless Orphans in Myanmar in Living Hell With Flooding, Malaria Infested Mosquitos, and Dead Bodies All Around After Deadly Earthquake

“There are still many people trapped under buildings that have collapsed,” reported a BTJ missionary that is helping in the earthquake area that left the nation of Myanmar devastated. So far, at least 2,000 people are confirmed dead and the pungent overwhelming smell of rotting flesh is everywhere. According to one report by CNN, Ko Zeyar, a social worker, the smell of death has overwhelmed entire towns as residents rush to bury bodies in mass graves.

BTJ missionaries are asking for urgent help with food and water. According to a conversation yesterday, “Food and water are the number one need!” That is why BTJ is sending aid today to help with the needs in Myanmar, but our help is not enough. Your donation for this effort can help add one more meal or one bottle of water.

BTJ is also working with orphans in Myanmar and what they are currently experiencing is a living hell. Since the year 2000, BTJ has been supporting several hundred children who do not have a mother or father. More than 25 years ago, BTJ missionaries from China began helping children who had lost their parents to disease, land mines, and in some cases, starvation.

Tonight, those orphans are sleeping outside because their orphanage has been destroyed by the earthquake. To add to the problem, massive rain storms have flooded the earthquake areas and the children are at the mercy of the elements, as well as malaria infested mosquitos. During the day, when it is not raining, they are scorched by the baking 100° F (37° C) sun.

Urgent help is needed. So far, BTJ has sent $10,000 to help the children in this situation and plan to send another $10,000 this week.

  1. Are there any trips going to Myanmar to help with the orphans? If so, how can I get connected to these groups?
I’m currently a third grade teacher and have summers off so I would love to maybe spend a couple of weeks or longer if the Lord calls and provide me to help! I used to be an orphan myself from China. I was 7 years old when I was adopted so I still have some memories.

    1. Hi Mandy, thanks so much for your kind comment. We have no planned trips out there right now – we are just working with our Chinese friends there on the ground, but there may be other missions groups who are taking teams out. I do hope an opportunity might come up for you!
      Blessings,
      Bethany (BTJ UK)

  2. Heartbreaking situation in Myanmar, with orphans and survivors facing floods, disease, and lack of food and water. Urgent support is desperately needed to help them through this crisis.

  3. This is heartbreaking to read, and thank you for keeping attention on the children left with nothing after the earthquake. It’s a stark reminder that shelter and safety are the most basic human needs. The phrase You Make This House a Home stayed with me while reading, because rebuilding that sense of home is exactly what these orphans need most right now. Praying that steady relief reaches them soon.
