In Day 5 of Bibles Not Bombs, we look at the life of Johannes Theodorus van der Kemp, one of the most unlikely missionaries of the modern mission era.
Once a soldier and an outspoken atheist, van der Kemp later became a missionary to South Africa and chose to live among the people he was trying to reach. He believed the Bible taught that all people are one in Christ. That conviction led him to challenge the cruelty of colonial injustice, defend Africans who were being mistreated, and insist that the gospel was not only something to preach, but something to live.
His life reminds us that the Word of God does not simply comfort us. It confronts our prejudice, challenges injustice, and brings enemies together at the feet of Jesus.
