The Bruce Lee Method of Following Christ
Thinking about traveling to Hong Kong this year? Maybe you have already been to Hong Kong and have seen all the main attractions. Just when you think that you have seen it all – there comes something new and exciting from around the corner.
Hong Kong has a great attraction that is popular among the mainland Chinese visitors. 41 years ago marked the death of a Chinese Martial Arts icon. The Hong Kong government teamed up with the Bruce Lee Foundation to put together an exhibition to bring in tourists. The exhibition has more than 600 items on display, including photos, costumes, and videos.
A 3.5 meter statue is now also on display for tourists to take pictures with. Close to 50 million people visit Hong Kong every year and many of them will make their way to the Kowloon side of the Harbor to visit the Bruce Lee statue. If you want to do this, try to make it before the sun sets, as you can get the best pictures of the harbor in the background and still make it back to Tsim Tsa Tsui for the Guinness World record-holding sound and light show. Many of these visitors are Christians who are fascinated with the martial arts movies of Bruce Lee.
Bruce Lee was not known to be a Christian, however, as Christians we should look at things around the world that are cultural influences that can help us share with those who have no connection to the teachings of Christ. The museum of Bruce Lee can be enjoyed on a personal level.
If you happen to travel to Hong Kong to see the Bruce Lee statue, you are more than likely to be surrounded by Chinese from the mainland. Try engaging them about Bruce Lee if they understand English. You might be surprised to learn that many of them will be excited to talk to you.
If you come across people that are fascinated with Bruce Lee, why not use that as a centerpiece to make new friends. Use some of the things that Bruce Lee has said to build a new relationship and introduce someone to Christ. Use the Bruce Lee Method:
Bruce Lee once said, “Do not pray for an easy life; pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.”
The Bible tells us, “Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” The Bible does not promise us absence of trial for an easy life, but instead we are given the strength to endure the difficult ones.
It does not say that they will not grow weary because they are lying in bed watching movies, but that they will be running and still not grow weary.
Bruce Lee also said, “It is not a daily increase, but a daily decrease. Hack away at the essentials.” He went on to say, “Empty your cup so that it may be filled; become devoid to gain totality.” The Bible tells us that we must decrease so that He can increase.
Bruce Lee has helped people around the world to know more about China. Today Chinese are leaving China and traveling all around the world in ways that they have never done before in their entire history. Many of the Chinese are Christians and are representing China in ways that Bruce Lee was never able to.
Back to Jerusalem missionaries are missionaries from China that are sharing about Jesus in places that have never heard the Gospel.
Bruce Lee was fit, tough, and dedicated to bring his entire mind and body under control; however, he was not tough enough to beat death. He was not fit enough to live forever.
Today, Back to Jerusalem missionaries are cultural ambassadors that are giving people the keys to eternal life.

I am sorry Bobby that you are not familiar with cross cultural missions. It deeply saddens me when people think that we should not or cannot attempt to connect with people who are not Christians with things that they are familiar with. Paul is the model on cross cultural missions. He went to Mars Hill in Athens and while waiting on his friends he decided to share about the “Unknown God” – which was a god that the local people had been honoring for 600 years before Christ. Paul used this connection to share with an unreached people group.
Have you been to Hong Kong? Because this article is written for people who are traveling to Hong Kong to see the tourist attractions and to use a cultural icon to share about Jesus. I am writing this response from Hong Kong now, only a few kilometers from this statue. It is Chinese New year and there will be thousands of people visiting this statue to take pictures. If I get the chance to talk to ANY of these guys, I will use the opportunity to share Jesus with them. It is CLEARLY written in the article, “Bruce Lee was not known to be a Christian, however, as Christians we should look at things around the world that are cultural influences that can help us share with those who have no connection to the teachings of Christ.”
This is what Paul showed us. This is what we do. Bruce Lee said some things that Christians believe. This is a great point to start when sharing the Truth with those that do not know the Truth.
“When asked by journalist Alex Ben Block in the summer of 1972 what his religious affiliation was, Lee answered: ‘None whatsoever.’ Block then pressed him further, asking him if he then believed in God: ‘To be perfectly frank, I really do not.’ ”
—John Little, “The Warrior Within: The Philosophies of Bruce Lee” (1996)
Bobby…..Very very wise, Thank you!
I loved your article Eugene. I am a follower of Jesus as well and have a love for Bruce Lee but a much greater love for God and making His Name known to others. I visited Hong Kong one month before the protests started in May of 2019. It was a wonderful experience! I have pictures with the Bruce Lee statue in Kowloon. I like how you said that Bruce was very strong but not stronger than death. Jesus sets us free from idols that can leave us feeling empty and Himself is eternal life. While following Bruce’s ways are interesting and he speaks with wisdom, Christ’s words are eternal!! Keep up the good work!
