We are so thankful to report that, with the establishment of a new Bible distribution center inside North Korea, God has really answered our prayers this year!
At the beginning of the year, BTJ asked supporters from around the world to join us in prayer for more Bibles in closed nations and partake in a 30 day devotional called BIBLES NOT BOMBS. This is a unique devotional that focuses on praying for those who are smuggling the Bible into the most unreached nations of the world. Day 10 of the devotional focuses on the first missionary to North Korea more than 150 years ago named Robert Jermaine Thomas.
Robert Jermaine Thomas traveled to China as a missionary and eventually took the first shipment of Bibles to Pyongyang. Not long after he arrived in Korea, the ship he was traveling on was attacked and set on fire. All the crew members onboard the ship were eventually killed. Before leaping from the burning ship, Robert reached down and grabbed a Bible. He jumped into the water below and swam towards the shore line where an angry mob awaited him. He was beheaded that day on the beach.
Eventually, the person that beheaded Robert Jermaine Thomas became a Christian and revival broke out! As Christian partners read the devotional about Robert Jermaine Thomas on Day 10 and prayed for North Korea, something amazing happened. BTJ missionaries secretly working inside North Korea reported a breakthrough.
Local missionaries reported that God opened doors for a brand new Bible distribution center! Bibles are desperately needed in North Korea and now there is an open door to deliver through this secret distribution center.
“[My connections] are helping me,” the BTJ missionary explains in a text message. “Please keep me in your prayers.”
Delivering Bibles inside North Korea is extremely dangerous. If anyone is found helping to smuggle or distribute Bibles, they will automatically face unimaginably harsh punishments and possible death. Anyone caught with a Bible is risking their life, but the people are desperate for the Word of God.
Today, just like during the days of Robert Jermaine Thomas, God needs agents ready to dedicate their lives to deliver the Word of God. Currently, there is a small window of opportunity that has recently opened for BTJ to smuggle Bibles into North Korea after many long years of waiting. It is not known how long this door will be open, so this year there is a huge push for us to get as many Bibles in as possible.
You can join together with BTJ to get Bibles into North Korea, as well as other closed nations. If you would like to join BTJ in 30 days of prayer for getting the Bible into closed nations, you can get the Bibles Not Bombs Devotional.
