The missionary world lost a special warrior for the Kingdom when Charles Lenhart passed away this week after a long fight with cancer.
Charles was not a missionary known by many people, but in the Chinese missionary circles, his work was legendary. Charles was the president of Harvest Ministries and took care of 175 churches, making up 14,500 believers. He kept a low profile for security reasons when he lived in China, but was a missionary and mentor conducting field training, planting churches, distributing Bibles and tracts, and helping cast vision for leaders in the most unreached areas of the Himalayas.
Those who knew him, knew him as “Big Chuck.” I first met him in 2003 in Kunming, China, where we attended the same foreign fellowship. In the early days of missions, I often heard stories of Big Chuck and his ventures of illegal ministry side by side with Paul Hattaway, the author of the Heavenly Man.
Big Chuck’s life touched countless people in the most unreached areas of the world and his passion for the kingdom will be dearly missed.
