According to a UN report, an astonishing 4 in 5 women in Afghanistan are not able to read and write and since the Taliban took over in 2021. Now, that number is plummeting even further.
The Taliban has banned women and girls from secondary and higher education completely. Not only is it functionally impossible for women to receive an education, but in the next generation or two it might be impossible for any woman in Afghanistan to read and write.
This is why BTJ is partnering with brave Christian women on the ground who are risking their lives to teach Afghan women how to read and write. Secret lessons are given to groups of women in caves to teach them the skills to know how to read and write.
If any of these women are discovered, they could be beaten by their families and even executed by the government.
