Candace Owens promotes China’s persecution against Christians.
Coming out in defense of the CCP’s policy against Zion underground house church and Pastor Ezra Jin, Candace Owens shared on her X account a post that repeats the Communist Party’s propaganda stating, “As my episode yesterday revealed, under the guise of spreading Christianity and establishing churches, the Mossad and CIA are infiltrating countries. It’s both a historical and present fact. They are also engaged in global trafficking.”
Candace is one of the most listened to podcasters in the world with millions of followers. In November 2025, her podcast was ranked as the #1 podcast in the world for “Downloads & Views Per Episode,” so going after jailed Pastor Jin Ezra seems like a bit of a punch down for her.
The post Candace shared was from a person who refers to himself as a “Commie Pommie.” Pommie is a slang term often used in Australia to refer to someone that is British. Commie Pommie wrote, “Ezra Jin wasn’t detained for being Christian, he was detained for building an organisation that deliberately operated outside the law, raised money, expanded rapidly and ignored the same rules every other religion in China must follow. China doesn’t fear Christianity. It fears religion being used as a tool, something Western intelligence agencies have done before and will do again.”
The Communist Party of China has consistently held that Christians must register with the government and be governed by the China Three Self Patriotic Movement (TSPM), an entity that dictates what Christians can believe and how they can practice their faith.
The regulations imposed by the Chinese government are not meant to promote the Christian faith in China, but to suppress it. The registration practice for Christians in China is not unique to China but is a common Communist Party tactic that was launched in the Soviet Union and is currently practiced in places like North Korea and Cuba. The same rhetoric of “religion being used as a tool” has been the argument used throughout Communist history for persecuting Christians. This rhetoric has its roots in Marxism which says, “Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.”
It is impossible for many Churches that follow the Christian faith according to their own conscience to register with the Communist Party of China because of some of the strict regulations that go against the teachings of Jesus.
For instance, it is illegal for registered Churches to proselytize in China. This government regulation directly goes against the command of Jesus Christ in Acts 1:8 and Matthew 28:18-19 to preach the Gospel to all the nations. In case there is any ambiguity in Jesus’ command to His followers, we can actually see the command play out in the first-century church as revealed in the Acts of the Apostles.
Christians who follow the command of Jesus and walk in the footsteps of the disciples therefore, cannot agree to this Chinese regulation and are therefore disqualified from registering.
It is also illegal in China for registered churches to share the Gospel with anyone under the age of 18 years old, directly defying Proverbs 22:6. Most Christians do not believe they can agree to not share the Good News with their own children in church and are therefore kept from registering with the Communist government.
There are many other regulations that keep Christians from registering with the government such as prohibition of pastors to travel and speak in other churches without government permission, lack of freedom for distributing Bibles and conducting baptisms without government permission, and controversial teachings about foundational beliefs in the TSPM about the virgin birth, return of Christ, and resurrection.
Churches that do not agree to be controlled by the Communist Party are not allowed to register, so they meet illegally.
Illegal meetings are not uncommon for Christians, in fact, it is a part of the churches DNA. Candace Owens and Pommie Commie are not the first to accuse unregistered Christians to be seditious or to act against the government. From the very beginning, Jesus was accused of inciting a rebellion or insurrection against the government and causing disorder.
For the first three hundred years of Christian history, churches were forced to gather illegally and meet in homes, just as the house church of China does today!
The Zion Christian church is a completely organic body of believers that has zero connection to foreign government bodies. I know, because I work with them!
To be clear, though I know the leadership of Zion Church in China, I have never been in leadership and have never been involved in the growth of the church. The leadership, funding, and growth of the church has all come from Chinese Christians – outside the influence of foreigners.
Zion Christian Church is made up of evangelicals and are forbidden to register in China, in spite of their multiple attempts to do so. Without registration, it is illegal for them to meet together and pray and worship Christ, so they risk their lives and their freedom to do so.
As evangelicals, they also believe strongly in completing the Great Commission and preaching the Gospel “to the ends of the earth.” The area of the world today with the largest number of unreached people groups that have never heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ are between China and Jerusalem, which is why Pastor Ezra Jin is one of the voices of the Back to Jerusalem movement, even writing a book on the vision of the Chinese underground house church.
The vision of the Back to Jerusalem movement is to establish churches all along the Silk Road all the way back to – and including – Jerusalem! This includes the idea of evangelizing the Jews and bringing them to Jesus to see the fulfillment of Matthew 24:14.
Candace Owens’ accusation against Zion Church and Pastor Jin completely falls apart with only an elementary understanding of the underground house church in China.
And Commie Pommie’s comments on the matter can be summed up with his handle name as a self-professed Commie, who clearly shares the propaganda of the Chinese Communist Party, which is why he is so proudly published and promoted by Communist Party media outlets. If he wrote anything that the Communist Party of China did not approve of, he would not be allowed to remain in the country.
