The Taliban detained 79-year-old Peter Reynolds and his 75-year-old wife Barbie while they were returning to Bamiyan on February 1.
The couple have dedicated almost twenty years to educational initiatives in Afghanistan. Sarah Entwistle from Northamptonshire initially spoke with her parents through text messages, but couldn’t reach them again after three days. She requested the Taliban to free them so they could keep delivering humanitarian assistance.
Since 2009, the Reynolds have directed educational initiatives with local government approval. The Taliban increased restrictions on female education after their takeover but the couple continued their community support work.
The UK Foreign Office has apparently made an acknowledgment of the detention of the couple, but has claimed limited capacity to assist.
