I was in China last week where I had the rare chance to sit down and have a secret meeting with the new senior pastor of China Gospel Fellowship, a network of believers estimated to be between 5-10 million people.
Several precautions were taken to ensure that he was not being followed by members of the Public Security Bureau.
In a small restaurant, the pastor proceeded to share a testimony that helps to answer the question of why China is experiencing a massive revival.
The pastor is not an educated man, but instead, he grew up on a poor rural farm in China’s Henan Province. His family struggled a lot during the Cultural Revolution when many Chinese were starving to death. At the age of 15 years old, he was stricken by a disease that left him paralyzed from the neck down. He was not able to move and at one point, had problems breathing, so a ‘barefoot’ doctor visited his house and cut a hole in his throat to help him breath.
From that point on, the pastor experienced nothing but misery and pain. “I tried to commit suicide,” the pastor admitted. “There was simply no hope. I couldn’t do anything but lay in bed and suffer every day.”
It was there, in his bed, while praying for death, that God worked a miracle in his life that would change him, the church, and the entire nation of China forever.
