What is God Doing in Yemen?

Yemen

Population: 18.8 million

Capital:    Sana’a

People Groups:  30

Main Religion:  Islam 99.94%

All Christians: 0.05%

Yemen is one of the poorest, least literate countries in the world. This amazing country had ancient civilisations since the beginning of history. It was probably the land of the Queen of Sheba. Jewish and later Christian influences (from third century) were present from then till the seventh century when the rule of Islam prevailed. In order to help dispel the myth that Christianity is a Western religion, ways are being sought to inform the modern Yemenis of their Christian heritage. e.g. through literature and radio. Pray for the effective outworking of this, and pray that Bible correspondence courses will not be intercepted. There is a very high mortality rate especially amongst children at birth and under 5 years. There is a great need for Primary Health Care Workers, Doctors, Obstetricians, Nurses, Midwives and other medical and paramedical staff. At least three Primary Health Care Programmes are being held up from lack of workers. A clinic in one city is ready to open but have only one Midwife. They urgently need primary health care nurses. There are two hospitals in great need of a variety of health care staff workers. Other medical staff will be needed as the work develops. Yemen has a population of 16,000,000 for which they have 70 dentists in the entire country. There is also a great demand throughout the country to learn English. One school in the capital has more applicants than they can accommodate. They have had a series of very short term teachers. They may have to close down if they can't find more teachers especially those with a more long-term commitment. Pray for more teachers of English. Perhaps the Lord wants you to go!  Yemen Prayer Fellowship, October 1997
